AN ACT TO RECOMMEND BUILDING ABBREVIATIONS BE CLARIFIED TO PROVIDE EASIER WAYFINDING ON NC STATES’ CAMPUS

WHEREAS, Many of the current building abbreviations, used by tens of thousands of students every semester to locate classes, are unnecessarily ambiguous. This ambiguity has caused difficulty to students, resulting in confusion and class tardiness; and,

WHEREAS, These abbreviations are used by the Facilities Department and the Department of Registration and Records for building identification, and are open to some modification as evident by the differences in the codes used between those departments; and,

WHEREAS, The results of maintaining the current building abbreviations, as seen in the past several years, have not been in support of the University’s academic interests and have unnecessarily wasted the time and energy of the Student Body; and,

WHEREAS, Improvements in clarity to the abbreviations for buildings that host classes and/or labs would have a lasting benefit for the students of North Carolina State University and with few changes made in recent years to these abbreviations, they are well overdue for modification; now, therefore be it;

RESOLVED, that the NC State Student Senate requests that the following changes be made:

a) Broughton Hall from “BR” to “BHT”

b) Flex Lab Building from “FLB” to “FXL”

c) Nelson Hall from “N” to “NEL”

d) Peele Hall from “PH” to “PEL”

e) Patterson Hall from “PT” to “PAT”

f) Ricks Hall from “RI” to “RIK”

g) Scott Hall from “SC” to “SCT”

h) Tompkins Hall from “T” to “TOM”

i) Withers Hall from “WI” to “WIT”

to reduce confusion between building name abbreviations; and be it further,

RESOLVED, The Student Senate requests the following changes also be made:

a) Erdahl-Cloyd Wing from “ECU” to “ECW”

b) University Student Center from “USC” to “TSC” for Registration and Records

to update old building name abbreviations; and be it further,

RESOLVED, The Student Senate requests the following changes also be made:

a) Biltmore Hall from “BI” to “BIL”

b) Brooks Hall from “BS” to “BRK”

c) Burlington Nuclear Labs from “BU” to “BNL”

d) Carter Finely Stadium from “CFL” to “CFS”

e) D.S. Weaver Labs from “DSW” to “WL”

f) Gardner Hall from “GA” to “GAR”

g) Harrelson Hall from “HA” to “HAR”

h) Kilgore Hall from “KI” to “KLG”

i) Leazar Hall from “LEZ” to “LZR”

j) McKimmon Center from “MCK” to “MKC”

k) Mann Hall from “MN” to “MAN”

l) Page Hall from “PA” to “PAG”

m) Winston Hall from “WN” to “WIN”

to improve the general clarity of building name abbreviations; and be it further,

RESOLVED, The Student Senate recognizes that there are dependencies with the current set of building abbreviations, however as evidenced by recent changes to building abbreviations such as “USTL” to “FOX” and “EGRC” to “MRC,” it also recognizes that change is possible. The Student Senate requests that all dependencies be resolved and the new names be implemented by the Fall 2008 semester.
