WHEREAS,    the University in the past has used a living wolf or wolf-like animal to act as the schoolÕs mascot representative; and,

WHEREAS,    ÒStateÓ, a Minnesota Timber wolf, was the UniversityÕs first living mascot; and,

WHEREAS,    in 1947, all athletics teams adopted the nickname ÒWolfpack,Ó and cheerleaders continued to use live wolves, nicknamed ÒLobo,Ó when they could be found, as mascots for football; and,

WHEREAS,    in 1966, a new wolf, Lobo III, was purchased to commemorate the opening of Carter Stadium, however an NC State zoology professor named Fred Barkalow discovered that Lobo III was actually a coyote, not a wolf; and,

WHEREAS,    the school transitioned after Lobo III from using a living animal out of preferences for using the costumed mascotÕs Mr. and Ms. Wuf; and,

WHEREAS,    other Universities across the United States, for example: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Florida State University, Louisiana State University, Texas University, The United States Air Force Academy, The United States Naval Academy, Colorado University, Oklahoma University, The University of Georgia, Memphis University, Northern Alabama University, and several more still use living mascots; and,

WHEREAS,    there is now a large group of Students at the University that would like to see the revival of the Lobo wolf mascot by again using a living wolf-like animal as a Official University mascot, while retaining and respecting the importance of both Mr. and Mrs. Wuf; now therefore be it,

RESOLVED,  that the Student Senate promotes the active search for and consideration of potentially reviving the Lobo mascot, by adding a new living wolf-like University mascot; and be it further,

RESOLVED, the search will include a review of animal candidates that could become a potential mascot for the University and also potential places in which the animal could be housed and cared for; and be it further,

RESOLVED,  that the administration will perform to the best of its ability to keep students informed and continue to ask for student input throughout the search; and be it further,

RESOLVED,  that a revival of the Lobo mascot is not an attempt to replace Mr. and Ms. Wuf and that they, along with Lobo IV, would all be respected official University mascots at various University events such as athletic contests, and be it further,

RESOLVED, that the actions above are from a desire to restore historic traditions of North Carolina State University for the Student Body and that the revival effort will move forward swiftly upon adoption of this bill by the Student Senate; and be it further,

RESOLVED, that any financial transactions concerning the Living Wolf Act be brought back to the North Carolina State University Student Senate in another piece of legislation for approval; and be it further,
