A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT TO STATE STUDENT SENATE’S POSITION ON THE RECREATIONAL SPORTS FEE INCREASE

WHEREAS,  Recreational Sports is requesting a fee increase to take affect in the 2013-2014 school year; and,

 

WHEREAS,  the Recreational Sports Fee supports operating and maintaining University Recreation programs, services and facilities including Fitness, Intramural Sports, Club Sports, Outdoor Adventures, Carmichael Gymnasium, Recreation Center and Aquatic Center, outdoor tennis and basketball courts and several outdoor recreation fields; and,

 

WHEREAS,  in addition to the Recreational Sports fee, University Recreation generates approximately $1 million each year (approximately 20% of the overall budget) through other sources such as memberships, facility rentals, and equipment repair and replacement; and,

 

WHEREAS,  research shows that participation in collegiate recreational sports is correlated with increased student success and satisfaction. Approximately 75% of the student body participate in University Recreation programs, services and utilize the facilities; and,

 

WHEREAS,  University recreation is requesting a fee increase of $14.93 bringing their total fee to $157.20 to take effect the 2013-2014 school year; and,

 

WHEREAS,  the fee would fund student wages, allowing the gym to extend hours during the summer, breaks and on weekends; service contracts that maintain recreation fields, as well as custodial contracts; increased utility costs; mandated salary increases; and enhancements to programs such as Wolf Wheels and Outdoor Recreation; now therefore be it,

 

RESOLVED, the Student Senate supports the full increase of $14.93; and be it further,

 

RESOLVED, that the Student Senate believes that during these times of economic recession that every office, program, and department on campus, including Campus Recreation, should look to use their current budgets more effectively by thinking carefully about their programming and mission, and reorganizing their budgets and spending habits to align with that thinking; and be it further,

 

RESOLVED, the Student Senate urges the Chancellor and Fee Review Committee to give consideration to these recommendations.
