Call to Order

 

Senate President Forrest B. Hinton called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM.

 

Introduction and Remarks from the Senate President

 

SSP Hinton introduced himself and welcomed the Senators to the Senate.

 

Presentation of Credentials and Roll Call; Senatorial Oath of Office

 

Ms. Bonnie Pierson, Chairman, Commission on Elections, read the list of Senators elected in the spring 2005 election.

 

There were thirty-seven (37) Senators-elect present (Adams, Barnes, Birdsell, Cariaga, Carter, Collins, Daugherty, Evans, Fabricius, Gardner, Gluck, Griggs, Haggard, Hankins, Hardy, Heath, Hoy, Hutcherson, Lam, Melton, Oluronbi, Phillips, Price, Rice, Salama, Santiago, Saunders, Shaw, Sohail, Stephenson, Templeton, Thornton, Walton, Weston, Whitehouse, Winfree, Yasin), who were sworn in to office by SSP Hinton.

·        Sen. Salama elected by a recorded vote:

o       There were twenty (20) Senators (Brannan, Buffkin, Cariaga, Compton, Fabricius, Gardner, Gluck, Haggard, Heath, Hutcherson, Price, Salama, Santiago, Saunders, Shaw, Stephenson, Templeton, Walton, Weston, Yasin) voting for Sen. Salama.

o       There were fifteen (15) Senators (Adams, Barnes, Carter, Collins, Daugherty, Evans, Griggs, Hardy, Hoy, Lam, Melton, Phillips, Sohail, Whitehouse, Winfree) voting for Sen. Adams.

o       There were two (2) Senators (Birdsell, Hankins) present but not voting.

o       There were three (3) Senators (Oluronbi, Rice, Thornton) absent.

Remarks from Student Body Officers

 

Ms. Jennifer Edwards, Student Body Chief Justice-elect

 

Ms Edwards introduces herself to the Senate and the Judicial branch generally.  Further discusses the summer business of the Judicial branch.  Announces the opening of applications for six (6) Judicial Assistants.  Anticipates producing information packet for Student Senators.

§         Sen Hutcherson requests information regarding the use of Judicial room in 307 Witherspoon

§         Sen Hoy requests information regarding the number of cases Judical Board handles

 

Mr. Seneca Toms, Student Body Treasurer

 

Mr. Toms introduces himself and general plans for the coming session.  Responds to question from Sen Hoy regarding the disposition of $4000 of Student Body Funds by saying that further investigation will be made.

§         Sen Hutcherson requests information regarding checks for Student Organizations from spring Appropriations.

 

Mr. Whil Piavis, Student Body President-elect

 

Mr. Piavis makes remarks regarding the coming session including coordination with College Councils.  Wishes to do “something” positive for the students.

§         Sen Hutcherson requests that the President wear proper attire, and with regards to the plastic parrot sitting on Mr. Piavis’s shoulder:  “Cook the bird, eat it, or walk the plank.”

§         Sen Hoy comments that Mr. Piavis has caused a loss of respect for Student Government from the Association of Graduate Students

§         Sen Compton requests a report on Executive Activities

§         Sen Fabricius requests that the Executive branch make recruitment of experienced student government officials a priority

§         Sen Hankins inquires regarding diversity on campus in the coming session

 

Educational Engagements

 

Mr. Forrest B. Hinton, Student Senate President makes comments regarding the operations of the Senate, and yields to various senior members to introduce the operations of individual committees within the Senate. Further solicits surveys from the Senators regarding service on Standing Committees.

 

Comments/Announcements

·         Sen Hoy comments on decorum in the Senate

·         Sen Barnes comments on offering help to new senators

·         Sen Yasin comments on Sen Hoys manners in addressing the SBP Elect

·         Sen. Hankins expresses the wish that Senators represent constituents without playing “quasi-politics”

·         Sen Melton comments on desires for the session

·         Sen Heath comments on decorum in the Senate

·         Sen Fabricius comments on the overall goal of Student Government and the necessity to provide reasoned arguments to administrators in advocating policy

·         Sen Hutcherson comments on decorum in the Senate Hall especially with regards to SBP elect Piavis

·         Sen Carter comments on dress and decorum in the Senate Hall and its relation to the need for mutual respect.

·         Leave of the senate-granted to allow Ms. Tierza Watts to comment on the upcoming session

·         Sen. Buffkin comments on the coming session

 

First Reading of Bills and Resolutions

 

·         SR 01, Associate Wolf Aides Director Confirmation referred to the Select Committee on Appointments.

 

Miscellaneous Business

 

Sen. Fabricius moved to suspend the rules of the Senate to allow the Select Committee on Appointments to meet without three days notice to appointees. The motion was agreed to.

 

A Recess for Delegation Caucuses

 

SSP Hinton cancels the scheduled recess for delegation caucuses due to the late hour. He asks all delegations to meet prior to the next Senate meeting.

 

Comments/Announcements

 

·         Sen. Phillips announces the Wolfpack Challenge Event occurring Saturday April 23

·         Sen. Hutcherson announces the availability of senior members of the Senate to assist with legislating

·         Sen. Fabricius announces the importance reading the Senate Handbook, and asks Senators to stay for a photo for the website.

·         Sen. Hoy comments on the importance of the Student Senate and encourages the improvement of relations with the Student Body
