SENATE MINUTES

 

Regular Meeting, Wednesday, August 24th 2005

 

President Hinton called the Senate to order at 7:30 PM

 

Opening Roll Call:

 

There were thirty-four (34) Senators (Adams, Barnes, Brannan, Buffkin (em), Cariaga, Carter, Collins, Compton, Erica Evans, Maria Evans, Fabricius, Gardner, Gluck, Griggs, Haggard, Hankins, Heath, Hutcherson, Lam, Michael Lloyd, Melton, Oluronbi, Kasey Phillips, Rice, Salama, Santiago, Sevits, Rondell Smith, Sohail, Templeton, Walton, Whitehouse, Winfree, Yasin) present.

 

There were eleven (11) Senators (Hardy, Hoy, Jones (em), Looney (em), Price (em), Saunders, Shaw, Stephenson, Thornton (em), Toms, Weston) absent.

 

A quorum was present.

 

The following officials were also present: Forrest B. Hinton, Piavis

Welcome back to the semester. Invites us to use the administrative team to come and speak to the senate. How senators can be advocates in holiday hall. Relationship building is how we move forward. To the senators: go and meet with your dean, meet with the associate dead for academic programs. It is how I keep up with the students and I encourage you to seek these folks out. Even though we are the largest institution in this state, I think we are the most personal. This is the people university, and we will always be a part of that.

 

Vision: Scholarship for the 21 century. All about listening to peoples needs, and reacting ins a relevant and responsive way.

 

A Culture of innovation: We are known for innovation, teaching / learning/ research. I hope you all get to work with a faculty member who is well known in their field.

Strong Commitment to Diversity. not just race, but all Types Capability.

 

Updates: Dean searches: COE and CNR. Construction: Changes to transportation. The updates to the main campus are on going. EB1 and 2 are having classes. EB1 is the first engineering class building in 40 years. Self liquidate funding, finish of wolf village, updates to the dorms.

 

Private buildings: Visitor center. (donors only)

 

Park alumni center. Friday institute. 16/10 mil responsible.

 

New tennis center, new baseball field.

 

Tuition task force. Determines what tuition will look like. We got a salary increase for faculty. This is very important because our faculty are leaving. We are selling our ice cream retail now.

 

Safety task force. We will have relevant and responsive safety on campus.

400 more students this year than last 4260 first time freshman. Largest class ever. We have increased graduation rate by 4% (last year) Sat 1186. US New and World Report rankings. Up across the board.

 

Questions: Hutcherson, Construction: reduction in handicap parking across the university.

 

A: I am not an expert, I will pass along. Tunnel: We have not changed the policy for helping folks across. Will be enhanced when it is done.

 

Q: Quality of education, what is plan to battle, to fight the increase in the number of students to our quality of education.

 

A: Historic challenge. 15 of 16 years of budget cuts. No way to spare the classroom. We do try to spare the class room as much as possible. (nelson) Added over a million a year last year to seats. Working to get the number down of over allocated sections. Registrar works during signup to alleviate sections. Go to ass dean for academic affairs.

 

Q: Tompson theater. We fought very hard for a larger amount. A: 10 mil from fees and 5 mil from donations. The fee has enhanced the private campaign to raise funds.

 

A:We are looking forward to working with Mr Hinton, and Mr Piavas.

 

-         Mr. Lee Hyde, Online Ticket Task-Force

 

Q: Where do you go, tickets.ncsu.edu. 48 hour request period.

 

A: 3000 for large groups, 4000 for small groups (ind) Groups: leader, Only leader wins/loses. You go to Reynolds Thursday before the game. give you a parking pass, Enter Gate 9. All open 4 hours prior. Student Entrances. Gate 10a and gate 12. Show ID and ticket. Enforcement is by the senate oversight (appeals group) Answered questions about tickets.

Homecoming Update: Entertainment will be in the rock genre this year.  Thanks the senate for their financial support. 60 folks came to last meeting.

Could not attend the meeting.

Jeffery Viscino spoke for Jennifer. Announced 4 new Judicial Assistants

Student Conduct will be launching a new web page

 

-         Mr. Seneca Toms, Student Body Treasurer

Gave a report on the funds that have been spent over the summer.

Appropriations is coming up. Mellisa Dubla as comptroller. Work on campus finance forum. Budget for last year is being finalized.

 

-         Mr. Whil Piavis, Student Body President

Welcome back, Put past years back in the hefty bag. We will put out fliers to get students to come see us. Update: welcomed the incoming students. Thanks for all students who helped with the information fair. Thanks for your support to change the special provisions on the budget.

 

Appointments: My appointments are done, but will be at the next meeting.

Locks of love: invited to campus. Adding a new banner.

CoS quit. Travis Birdcell. Setting up a website for showing the plans for this year.

Hope to have the senate add a page similar.

Finance Committee

Chair Fabricius: Finance met twice, and talked about funds for this year. Some surplus will be spend, and the figure will be lower than expected. Wolf aids and homecoming might get some of these funds.

Two places that left over funds come from, overall budget from last year of out and in. That amount is regulated and will be looked at. The leftover from previous years will be looked at by the committee.

Carla Babbs (Senior Class President): for Patrick Phillips. Tsunami relief bracelets. Greek life and SG offices.

 

Hutcherson: Respond about the article in the technician. Upset about the inaccuracies in the article. Upset that parts of the funds for the bracelet’s goes to a company. Appropriations is taking requests for members.

A: 2 weeks.
