Report No. AC-05
Senator Gary Palin submitted the following report regarding Resolution 47, "AN ACT CONCERNING THE FORMULATION OF A COMMISSION TO STUDY THE ISSUE OF ACADEMIC ADVISING AT NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY", on Sunday, January 28, 2001, on behalf of the Academics Committee, and pursuent to its January 24, 2001 recommendations, by unamimous consent:
As provided by Senate Rule 12(b), the committee requests that the Senate President place Resolution 27 on the calendar for second reading.
There were seven (7) Senators (Atkinson, Craver, Devore, Mineiro, Palin, Peck, Ramirez.) present;
There were two (2) Senators (Feucht, Guthrie.) absent;
A quorum was present.
R 47 seeks to encourage the Office of the Provost to establish a committee of faculty, studetns and administrators to study the issue of academic advising. Furthermore it requests that the aforementioned committee determine actions that could be taken by the university to improve academic advising.
Academic advising has been an issue that has been of concern to students as long as there has been a Senate. However, it is a complex issue, and virutually impossible to make a specific recommendation on the issue currently.
The committee was very much in support of the concept of the resolution, and debate was focused on how to improve the wording of the resolution.
The committee on academics recommends that R 47 be calendared for second reading.
The first WHEREAS clause was ammended to read:
WHEREAS, the mission of N.C. State University is to provide a quality education to its students; and,
the word University was added to the end of the second resolved clause.
