RESOLUTION 61
Senator Gary Palin submitted the following report regarding Resolution 61, "A Resolution To Be Entitled An Act Calling Upon North Carolina State University To Commission A Study Of The Granting Of Course Credit For Students Who Have Completed The International Baccalaureate Program", on Monday, February 5, 2001, on behalf of the Academics Committee, and pursuent to its February 4, 2001 recommendations, by unamimous consent:
As provided by Senate Rule 12(b), the committee requests that the Senate President place R 61 on the calendar for second reading.
There were eight (8) Senators (Atkinson, Craver, Devore, Feucht, Mineiro, Palin, Peck, Ramirez.) present;
There were zero (0) Senators () absent;
A quorum was present.
Resolution 61 seeks to have the Office of the Provost form a commission to examine the issue of credit for International Baccalaureate exams.
More students are engaged in a high school program known as the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. There was concern among several students and senators that there was not equity in how the university granted credit for IB classes compared to the credit for the AP exam. Also, there was a concern with equity as compared to how NCSU's peer institutions dealt with IB credit.
There was a general description of what IB was, along with comments regarding the the purposes of the program itself. There was some concern as to whether or not equity existed between IB and AP, however it was decided that the resolution calls for a commission to be formed which would determine such issues.
The Committee on Academics recommends that R 61 be calendared immediately for second reading.
