RESOLUTION 50

Chairman Andrea DeWees submitted the following report regarding Resolution 50, "Student Choice Act", on Monday, April 7th 2003, on behalf of the Academics Committee, and pursuant to its Wednesday, April 2nd 2003 recommendations:

As provided by Senate Rule 14(b), the committee requests that the Senate President place Resolution 50 on the calendar for second reading.

Attendance:

There were four (4) Members (DeWees, O'Grady, Sipe, Spencer) present.

There were two (2) Members (Ogbon, Zink) absent.

A quorum was present.

The following officials were also present: Brewer, Carty, Choe, Cox, Horne, Marxreiter, Milrad, Mital Patel, Pendergrass, Plummer, Price, Siska, Tatum, Allison Watkins, Wright

Purpose of Legislation:

The purpose of this resolution is to form a COMMITEE composed of faculty and students to look into the FEASIBILITY of alternatives and issue a public report on their findings.

Debate:

Concerns voiced that forming this committee will be both redundant and underminding to the CALS faculty because they have already looked into the issue of alternatives themselves.

Yet, others voiced that this committee will be advantageous because not only will the facts, figures, and concepts of the feasiblity of alternatives be available, but there will be an accountable group that can detail the issues behind the use of alternatives.

Recommendations:

This issue is a "STUDENT" issue. This resolution has the potential to affect a large number of students and therefore the committee felt that it needed to be heard and voted on my the entire Student Senate.

Committee Amendments:

Committee Substituted a new version

Some amendments included
-the removal of two whereas clauses
-the addition of the first whereas claus
-detailing the composition of the committee
-the removal of the first and last resolved clauses
