COMMISSION REPORT
Report No. HSC-01
Chairman Carla Babb submitted the following report on Monday, January 10th 2005, on behalf of the Hillsborough Street Commission, and pursuant to its Saturday, January 1st 2005 recommendations:
There were seven (7) Members (Adams, Babb, Freeman, Hager, Leatherman, Polumbo, Summey) present.
There were zero (0) Members absent.
A quorum was present.
The purpose of the Hillsborough Street Comission is to create a community environment for students on Hillsborough Street while bringing increased business to vendors. In doing so, the university community will work harmoniously with vendors to provide students with an enjoyable experience while at NC State.
The HSC has been busy making contacts for the next Progressive Dinner since the last report. We have met about once a week (sorry I don’t have the specific dates) in order to plan the Football Frenzy for the Miami game and the final dinner for the semester. With the Frenzy, multiple members spoke with 15 businesses asking for discounts for the Miami game, and we got over a 50 per cent return rate with eight businesses agreeing to give students discounts that day. Those included “old faithfuls” such as East Village, Papa John’s, and Sylvia’s as well as new HSC participants such as PizzAmerica, Subway, Q-Shack, Burger King, and Farmhouse. We are also in the process of helping a new lounge area be set up on Hillsborough Street above Sir Speedy’s, and I just met with the new owners today in order to discuss how students can be involved with the design process, etc.
I am very excited to say that all goals have been met this year. Bradley Kimbrell and Hugh Leatherman are both attending the Raleigh HSC meetings as student representatives, and Danielle Polumbo was appointed as the new secretary. Since the phone tree is like gold to our commission, attendance was low our last meeting, but I am continuing to try to work with people’s schedules so that we can all meet at once. The newest contact that I have made is with G Patel, CEO of Cloud Nine Company, who has just leased the area for the new lounge.
The future looks bright for the HSC, as we have the businesses in place and the date for the next Progressive Dinner. In our meeting on Friday, we will discuss ticket sales and brickyard selling shifts.
Respectfully submitted,
Carla Babb
