RESOLUTION 144

Chairman James E. O. Hankins, II submitted the following report regarding Resolution 144, "An Act To Change The Current General Education Requirements", to the Student Senate on Sunday, April 2nd 2006, on behalf of the Academics Committee, and pursuant to its Wednesday, March 29th 2006 recommendations, by general consent:

As provided by Senate Rule, the committee requests that the Senate President place Resolution 144, on the calendar for second reading.

Attendance:

There were six (6) members (Dimond, Hager, Hankins, Musick, Shivers, Winfree) present.

There was one (1) member (Kling) absent. There was also one (1) suspended member (Oluronbi) absent.

The following officials were also present: Adams, Cariaga, Collins, Compton, Hassell, F. Hinton, Mickey, Miller, Toms, Walton.

A quorum was present.

Purpose of Legislation:

To give the students' perspective on how to change the GER

Background Information:

- Committee has discussed the issue, the entire semester

- Chair serves on the GER Task Force

- Senators were asked to bring ideas to discuss

Debate:

- Much debate over new ideas and hours in the GER

- Was decided that a complete overview of the GER would not be effective in this committee

Recommendations:

- That these factors listed in the bill be considered in the current GER structure

Committee Amendments:

- The bill as written is in itself an, "amendment"
