Committee Minutes, Tuesday, February 21st 2006
Secretary Sara Yasin submitted the following report to the Student Senate on Tuesday, February 21st 2006, on behalf of the Committee on Appropriations, and pursuant to its Tuesday, February 21st 2006 recommendations:
There were nine (9) members (Barnes, Compton, Gula, Hutcherson, Mickey, Miller, R. Smith, Walton, Yasin) present. There was also one (1) non-voting member (Toms) present.
There were no members absent.
The following officials were also present: Adams, Gardner, Griggs, Hankins, Heath, F. Hinton, Oluronbi, Saunders, Sivakumar.
A quorum was present.
Second day of appropriations interviews
AR 29: Student Chapter of the Society for Theriogenology
- Event budget is 1550, max fund would be half of that
- Not bringing any money in
- Will appeal
AR 17: Student Chapter of the American Asosociation of Equine
- 100 kids from the public, 50 vet students
- A lot of interest, good publicity
- First time doing this, teaching kids
- Hope to make it an annual event
- Submitted their receipts
- Tracy fully supports printed materials and part of the stethoscopes
AR 47 Animal Science Graduate Student Association
- Benefits by NC State by opening professional seminar to other organizations, etc.
- about 40 graduate students, not heavily attended by undergraduates
- Trying to publicize it
- Trying to fundraise, have done bake sales, etc. selling more t-shirts
AR 25 Agribusiness/ NAMA Club
- Working on marketing plan for product, medicinal herbs
- Money to help w/transportation and lodging
- Didn’t seek funds in the fall
- Hypothetical plans, based around Asheville area
-Strongly point out that they represent NC State, 200 companies that will be out there
AR 26 Poultry Science Club
- Chick booth
- Educating public on poultry industry
- Told to re-apply in the fall
A committee member remarked that Senator Hutcherson should remove his hat, and another committee member noted that this committee member should remove their face. No one was hurt.
Voting on whether to give organization a second chance
Hutcherson made motion to not consider group, motion wasn’t seconded, did not pass
Walton made motion to move discussion to dinner, motion seconded, objected to, voted on, passed
AR 05 Student Chapter of the American Association of Swine Veteranarians
- Twelve students attending conference, pretty good representation of NC State
- Issues with animal welfare being discussed, students represented in timely issue
- One of top four veterinary schools in the nation
AR 13 Student American Veterinary Medical Association
- Expecting over 2000 vet students, speakers, from all over the country.
- Are not registered with SORC office, registered, but just not updated
- Large scale event at Vet school
AR 83 Club Tennis
- 75 members
- clarified that it is a trip/travel request
- Try and get together and do community service
- Most they can request is 700
AR 62 Alpha Tau Alpha
- Honor society
- Open to upperclassmen
- Really want to promote Ag leadership
- Networking and fellowship between peers, want to get to know each other now
- March 27th/28th Induction
- Chapter of national organization
Motion made to make Walton stop speaking about education, motion seconded, consent called, objected to, passed by voice vote, approved by chair
AR 64 CERES
- Requesting $1500
- Total request says $1500, but on 4 it says student government 750 (because assumed would get that amount)
- Raised a little over $3000 to American Cancer Society, goal is to exceed that
- Hoping to make it an annual event
- Trying to publicize
AR 06 Wolfpack Dodgeball Club
- Start up fund
- a lot of interest in the organization
- Need money for equipment to start
- Dues “the less the better”
- 42 balls
- Takes 6 balls in a game
- Buy balls in bulk
- Balls will last for a long period of time
- Want to be independent
AR 27 NCSU College Democrats
- Money to go to spring Young Democrats convention
- Senator Hankins pointing out that this is a low amount requested for trip/travel
- Money for registration fee
AR 29 NCSU College Democrats
- Large scale, on campus event
- Had 60-70 when talked about social security
- Publicize forum through groups, facebook, advertise in paper
AR 32 Native-American Student Association
- Competition style pow-wow this year
- about 2,000 people circulated through the room
- This year held in Carmichael Gym
- Last year had 45 dancers
- Waiting on MSA to get receipts
- Prize money will allow them to attract more dancers
- Usually have a budget of around $10,000
- $25 vendor free, clubs associated with NC State are free
AR 33 Alpha Phi Alpha
- Learning about past as African Americans, try to hold it annu
- High scale event, last year was at McKimmon Center
- Expect no more than 100 people attending the event
- Organization inquired on about what reasons would not allow them to receive funding, Vice-Chair Compton noted the demand on the appropriations money.
AR 34 NCSU Habitat for Humanity
- 5K race this year
- Moving it back to Centennial Campus
- Brickyard Registrations this week and next week
- Advertising: flyers, Boys & Girls, website
- All money goes to build home in Wake County
- If not funded, have money to fund the event
- 200 + people expected to come
- Making changes and upgrades to this event
AR 53 NCSU Habitat for Humanity
- Spring break trip to Miami, FL
- Building a house for a week
- Hoping to offset traveling expenses
- Priority, trying to push the race
AR 37 Delta Upsilon
- Social fraternity
- Trying to impact students on campus/ increase awareness
- Large event
- On campus event with large turnout
- All profits go to Boys & Girls club
AR 45 Arnold Air Society
-Non- Profit, Professional, Honorary, service organization
- Organization within Airforce ROTC
- Need appropriations for hotel fees, registration fees, HURICON fees, travel fees
- Cadets are everywhere on campus, as leaders, v. visible.
- Need two vans (500-600 dollars)
- Trying to attend national conference
AR 58Turkish Student Association
- Increase awareness of Turkish culture on campus
- Trying to reach as many people as possible
- Turkish Night, performers folk dancing
- Promoting diversity and culture
- Expecting 300-400 people
- In Dorton Arena
- Sell tickets to make up for food
AR 59 Turkish Student Association
- Exploring Carolina is important
- Planning to go to around and learn about American society and history

- Going to New York
-Priority is Turkish Night, because that is what they want to do, Carolina second, New York bottom of the list.
AR 71: SAA PAMS
- Outreach organization
- Keeping diversity in PAMS
- African American history quiz bowl, educate other ethnicities about black history, something that wouldn’t be learned about
- Senator Hankins suggesting that is a lower request so should be fulfilled
- People not just from NC State, diverse crowd from community
- Very successful event
- Supermarket sweep money would go to food
AR 73 Student Body Chinese Club
- Don’t have a lot of students
- Start- Up fund
- Try to get more people involved
- Very diverse organization
AR 89 Omega Psi Phi
- Christian based organization
- Annual program in the spring
- Aimed for NC State students to participate, but many people participate
- Do a program in Witherspoon, money goes to community
- Drop 50/bucks in order to achieve fund matching
AR 92 Hillel
- Holocaust Event- history and awareness
- Bring in all people from university
- BGLA, ROTC are all in
- Looking for Diversity (word of the day)

AR 44: Alpha Kappa Alpha
- Targets children from ages of 3-10, 6-10 have to write stories, local stories judge stories
- Winner sent to national organization and to compete
- Stories to be made creative
- Local community, for community
- $1425 brought to table
- Could only fund that much, but can not fund food
AR 56: Wolfpack Majorettes
- Try to do one competition every year
- Have won 3 national championships in 3 years
- Involve community
- Hutcherson remarking that it sounds more like a special case, rather than athletics, because don’t fall under club sports, but trying to
- Hosting Nationals would be big fundraiser
- Right now getting people to join, so no dues yet
AR 74 Society for Human Resource Management
- Leadership program for students, nationally recognized speakers work with students
- People that are going will learn to be more effective leaders
- Win regionals a lot, businesses see them win, walk up to members and speak to them
- Help take new members
- Go every year, 5-6 years, have made it to nationals
AR 85 Every Nation Campus Ministries
- Requesting money for annual conference, campus harvest
- A lot of college students attend
- Faith based event, with strong focus on leadership
- Paying $30 each
