GOVERNMENT BILL 122

Chairman Erich M. Fabricius submitted the following report regarding Government Bill 122, "AN ACT TO PROVIDE MISCELLANEOUS AMENDMENTS TO THE STUDENT BODY STATUTES TO MAINTAIN CONSISTENCY WITH EACH OF THE SEVERAL SIMPLIFICATION ACTS ", to the Student Senate on Wednesday, March 22nd 2006, on behalf of the Select Committee on Government Simplification, and pursuant to its Tuesday, March 21st 2006 recommendations, by general consent:

As provided by Senate Rule, the committee requests that the Senate President place Government Bill 122, on the calendar for second reading.

Attendance:

There were four (4) members (Fabricius, Godfrey, Griggs, Hutcherson) present.

There was one (1) member (Barnes) absent.

A quorum was present.

Purpose of Legislation:

The Simplification Consistency Act addresses areas where statutes do not match with other changes by the committee's bills, as well as handles matters in chapters 5 and 7, which the committee did not address.

Debate:

Sen. Godfrey proposed that the committee address a point of confusion in the elections statutes regarding joint campaigns of one person. The committee addressed this with an amendment.

Recommendations:

The committee recommends the act to the Senate.

Committee Amendments:

The committee added:

Section 5. Student Body Statutes §7-4.25(c) shall be amended by adding: “When running for multiple offices, candidates may form joint campaigns with themselves.”
