RESOLUTION 74

Secretary Jeanne Chen submitted the following report regarding Resolution 74, "An Act to Revise Current Dead Week Policy", to the Student Senate on Tuesday, January 29th 2008, on behalf of the Academics Committee, and pursuant to its Thursday, January 24th 2008 recommendations, by general consent:

As provided by Senate Rule, the committee requests that the Senate President place Resolution 74, on the calendar for second reading.

Attendance:

There were six (6) members (Briggs, Carter, Chen, Joyner, Poteat, Roscoe) present.

There were three (3) members (Donnelly, Parnell, Warren) absent.

The following officials were also present: Alston, Demanovich, Foxx, Palmer.

A quorum was present.

Purpose of Legislation:

To reword the Dead Week Policy in order to make it more clear to both students and faculty members in case there is any dispute on Dead Week assignments.

Background Information:

The Academics Committee has discussed the continuing issues concerning Dead Week since last semester. No action had been taken since the bill past last session in regards to clarifying Dead Week, and this bill was drafted to make a more solid recommendation.

Debate:

There was no debate.

Recommendations:

- Senator Carter proposed that Section 2 of the first Resolved clause should add the statement "or unanimous prior consent of the class" to the last sentence.
- Senators Roscoe and Carter proposed that the last section of the first Resolved clause should add "and the professor appears to be unreceptive" at the end of the first sentence.

Committee Amendments:

- The last sentence of Section 2 of the first Resolved clause was amended to, "Exceptions may be made in the case of class presentations, semester-long projects in lieu of a final exam, and deadline extensions for individual students upon request or unanimous prior consent of the class." - Passed unanimously by all present members.

- The first sentence of the last section of the first Resolved clause was amended to, "Students should contact the appropriate department head or college dean if they believe an assignment is not in compliance with these regulations and the professor appears to be unreceptive." - Passed unanimously by all present members.
